Oskar Guðjonssons MOVE
Exploring Handwritten Compositions
Seven years ago, saxophonist Óskar Guðjónsson assembled a quartet with a unique focus: performing handwritten compositions meticulously accumulated in his sketchbooks over time. What began as a project evolved into a passionate endeavor shared by all members. Their journey unfolded within Eyþór Gunnarsson’s studio, where they explored, interpreted, and experimented with the pieces. Simultaneously, the music took shape, forging strong connections among the musicians.
In addition to Óskar and Eyþór, the quartet includes Valdimar Kolbeinn Sigurjónsson on bass and Matthías Hemstock on drums—each sharing their initials in the name “MOVE.” Handwritten scores, increasingly rare in the digital age, hold a delicate nuance that sets them apart. Óskar’s personal style, reflected in his compositions’ handwriting, aligns with his comprehensive yet spontaneous approach to performance.
Spontaneity fuels the desire for music to evolve independently, adapting to time and circumstances. Although instrumental, MOVE’s compositions bear names inspired by reflections on life, existence, and people. Their sketchbooks serve as diaries, capturing life’s moments. Countless rehearsals have been recorded, and listening back to these recordings reveals the essence of each piece.
As the final note echoes, MOVE shares a collective realm of ideas—a journey awaiting exploration. Get ready for their debut album, set to release in May 2025, followed by an exhilarating European tour in both May and September. Promoters and venues, prepare to be moved!
